CHAPTER FOURTEEN
The other day, Papa mentioned how much Iâd grown over the years. Maybe so. His steps coming up the staircase now seem weaker than they used to sound, his breathing is heavier than ever, and when he stops at our front door, I can hear his keys drop along with a loud, âGod damn it!â Next comes his body banging against the door, as he is obviously bending over to retrieve them.
Staggering inside, his call out to Mama almost sounds pathetic, like heâs the lost little boy, and Iâm the grown up. As I listen to him stumble around, banging into furniture, instead of being frozen with fear like so many times before, I now think of ways of ending him. At home? Mama has plenty of knives handy. At work? Yes, thatâs the ticket. Put him away from us, where he belongs.
Wait a minute. Have I been fooling myself? I can hear him in the bedroom, slapping my mother. But why am I suddenly feeling so weak, so demoralized? Itâs like Iâm no longer fifteen but a mere five-year-old, so frightened I want to crawl under the floorboards.
But when I hear Mama softly sobbing, that brings back my manhood. I run over to their bedroom and stop, horrified. Heâs not only hit her, heâs tied her down and is preparing for another strike.
I canât let him do it. I canât! Without warning, heâs turned toward me, his face twisted with pure evil. Now I know what I must do. I run into our kitchen and pull out Mamaâs largest knife. When I get back into the bedroom, I see his dark eyes are wide and glaring at me. But Iâm no longer afraid. I hear a deep voice in the room, but it isnât his. Itâs mine, growling, âNever again, Papa. Never again!â Then I raise the knife and stab him repeatedly. And after he falls to the floor, I kick-kick-kick the stilled, drunken monster.
